Editorial of September 9, 2004

To the editor,

I am writing in response to your editorial of September 9, 2004, titled “Small step, fairer housing.”

The premise of the editorial is that the University withholds 15% of the housing inventory in all residences for entering freshmen. This premise is false. I have been the Director of Housing since 1987; we have never held a percentage of rooms in the residences for freshmen. I am not sure of the source of your information but it is wrong. Vacancies in residences occur after the room selection process either because rooms were not selected or as a result of cancellations. Where possible, vacancies are filled by offering room changes to continuing students. This year over 900 continuing students were offered and accepted room changes over the summer.

Sincerely,

Marc Robillard Director of Housing 985 Commonwealth Avenue Boston, MA 02215 617-353-3502
