Comedy, politics hit BU Central

Deemed the “The Thinking Man’s Comic,” Steve Hofstetter entertained more than 100 Boston University students Saturday night at BU Central with his comedy routine, which asserted several political and social messages.

Hofstetter – who has been compared to comedian Ray Romano – said his nickname was coined in a newspaper review a couple of years ago and stuck because it reflects his audience.

“I talk about something that dumb people aren’t going to get it,” he said.

Hofstetter’s material – which focuses on religion, body image, politics and current events – carries political undertones despite its comedic presentation, he said. He said he used the crowd to interact and personalize the show as he would during any regular comedy club performance.

“If I talk about an issue that pushes the envelope, I’m going to like it more with a college audience,” Hofstetter said. “When I make ‘Saved by the Bell’ references, people are going to get it.”

During his act, he called on the American government to take action in regard to the Federal Communications Commission’s nudity policy and said he blamed parents for child obesity. He urged young people in the audience to become active in the voting process and deepen their awareness of government policies.

He said he wants to “teach smart people to kill the stupid people.” BU alumnus Barron Vaughn opened for the 26-year-old comedian and introduced Hofstetter as “Your friend on TheFacebook.”

The Student Activities Office hosted the event as part of BU Central’s Laugh Out Loud comedy series.
