Dan Klein

Dear Editor,

In printing yesterday’s taradiddle of a column by senior opinion writer Dan Klein, the Daily Free Press has sunk to what can only be lauded as a newfound nadir in journalistic integrity. “A Columbus Day carol” was not so much as a column as it was a slapdash series of oddly-phrased fabrications, devoid of meaning, substance, and a point. Purporting to concern a certain made-up person called “Jimmy Finnegan”-but really, I must underscore, about nothing at all-the yarn was threadbare from its opening line. In order that readers of this letter may judge for themselves the extent to which my assessment of Klein’s buncombe as buncombe is unequivocally correct, I will reproduce aforementioned buncombe in a stock instance: “Jimmy reached into his bag and handed Mayor Nayor a mustache.” That Jimmy would carry around a bag with mustaches in it! That Jimmy would hand a mustache to the Mayor! That the Mayor’s last name would rhyme with his first name in the first place! I hope to have made it clear by now-Klein is absurd. And not in a good way. The piece is not cute, it is not funny, and it most certainly is not harmless postmodernist burlesque. Disseminated to the Boston University community yesterday was the onanism of Klein’s ego, disguised but thinly in words, and as a member of the Boston University community, as a Daily Free Press reader, I was insulted. Please encourage Klein to start having some opinions or to stop posing as an opinion columnist.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Page UNI ’06
