Letters to the Editor: Misconceptions about the Catholic Church

n Re: “Returning insensitivity to the Catholic Church,” (page 7, Oct. 27) As a Catholic, I am not offended by Dennis Reardon’s column, as he said he hoped strong Catholics would be, but saddened because it is full of the many misconceptions about the Church and Church teachings that are often perpetuated by the media.

The Catholic Church teaches the Truth, authored by God, not the Church. The Church has a responsibility to tell the truth, not tone it down so that it is palpable to all. As Archbishop Seán O’Malley often says, “Jesus didn’t come into the world to give us the warm fuzzies.” He came to save us and to challenge us with His Truth so that we can better know God.

There are many untruths in Reardon’s column, and, by his own admission, the majority of his column is “purposefully unfair.” I invite him and all who read his article to learn more and seek true understanding about the Catholic Church.
