Letters to the Editor: Offending the Church

n Thursday’s column by Dennis Reardon (“Returning insensitivity to the Catholic Church,” page 7, Oct. 27) was remarkable. Sadly it was not remarkable for any insight it provided, but because it was so poorly written.

While as a practicing Catholic I disagree with Mr. Reardon’s views, I would have been willing to listen to his perspective, if he had at least presented it coherently.

However, in order to prove his point, he relied not on facts but upon media sound-bytes. He attempted to elicit knee-jerk reactions from people rather than persuading them through any use of reasoning. In the process of writing his piece, not only does he fail to present what the Church actually teaches, he also stoops to skewing historical, sociological and biological realities in order to get his point across.

I also wonder why Mr. Reardon felt it necessary to present a “purposely unfair treatment” on the Church’s teaching at all. If the Church’s teaching truly were that bad, then he would merely need to present it for what it is, without having to intentionally slant it.

Truth should be clear, it should be evident, and you should not need to perform journalistic acrobatics to arrive at it. The truth is that what Mr. Reardon presented has nothing to do with what the Catholic Church actually teaches and believes. Rather it was just a senseless rant, and while senseless rants are fine for a conversation among friends, they do not belong in any reputable publication.
