Casanova

Charming! Delightful! Kind of bad, but amusing! Lasse Hallström’s Casanova starts out as a cute rip-off of every Shakespearean comedy, but eventually devolves into a corny, messy cliché. It features a shamelessly contrived story and gives Jeremy Irons an unforgivably flat character, but the film itself is beautiful. Heath Ledger, too, is beautiful, and the cheerful score keeps you in high spirits even through the more painful moments. It’s no Don Juan DeMarco (which, really, is only good if you can handle Marlon Brando’s enormity, which makes Oliver Platt, who features in this film, look like Mischa Barton), but Casanova is undeniably entertaining.
