The Boston City Council passed an initiative declaring September “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the City” yesterday at City Hall.
Councilor-At-Large Michael Flaherty said he proposed the resolution to increase public knowledge about the disease, which he said affects about one in 58 women nationwide.
“We must make a difference through awareness and education,” Flaherty said. “[Ovarian cancer] is a silent killer.”
The council also announced the city will pay for the funerals of Paul Cahill and Warren Payne, the two firefighters who died in a West Roxbury restaurant fire two weeks ago. The Boston Police Department received nearly $350,000 in federal grants to support its forensics services, while the Boston Fire Department received $35,000 from St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center to acquire new fitness equipment.
