Council observes peace day

The Boston City Council officially recognized Sept. 21 as the United Nations International Day of Peace in addition to passing all resolutions on its agenda without incident in an unusually brief meeting yesterday at City Hall.

Penny Snieder-Light, a representative for the World Peace Prayer Society in Boston, said she worked with Councilor-at-Large Felix Arroyo to pass the resolution honoring the International Day of Peace.

Snieder-Light said the World Peace Prayer Society is a U.N. Non-Governmental Organization that has attempted to create an international day of peace for a long time.

The Shannon Grant, a $3 million grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety to develop programs designed to reduce gang violence, also passed by unanimous decision.

“This grant is an acknowledgement that the police cannot solve the problem of violence alone,” said Councilor Charles Yancey (Dorchester, Mattapan). “It is great to see police supporting funds going to youth organizations. I commend and encourage the budding partnership that is emerging between youth organizations and the police.”

Councilor Rob Consalvo (Hyde Park, Roslindale) also proposed a law that would increase the city’s number of alcohol vending licenses.
