Starting the season fresh with new faces, the Boston University women’s tennis team completed its first event of the year over the weekend with three superb tie-breaking matches at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I.
The invitational, played in a hidden duel format, featured players from BU, Brown University, Rutgers University and Temple University. Most of the Terriers competed in three singles matches and three doubles matches.
Lacking senior leadership, BU coach Lesley Sheehan expected to experience some difficulty this weekend, but sophomore Elizabeth Corrao and freshman Vanessa Steiner surprised their coach by winning all three of their respective singles matches.
“[Steiner and Corrao] did very well,” Sheehan said. “I see a lot of potential in their playing. I see a lot there.”
Corrao and Steiner had three wins against singles players from Brown, Rutgers and Temple. Corrao dominated her match against Rutgers counterpart Christine Tran in a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Historically, BU has played well at the invitational, which serves as a preview to what the players can expect for the rest of the season.
“We’ll be working on good combination and double team sets,” Sheehan said. “We need to get everyone ready for the spring season. I mean that’s what the fall season is for, to get ready for the spring season.”
For the remainder of the fall, the Terriers will work on their lineup and practice getting their double teams together.
“We’re going to have to work on getting the ball deeper and we’ll work on consistency,” Sheehan said. “We have to get better for the spring season because that’s where it counts.”
This weekend, the Terriers will play in the NTC Invitational in Flushing, N.Y., the site of the U.S. Open. Sheehan is looking forward to the event because her players will be able to experience one of tennis’s greatest stages.
