The Boston University swimming and diving teams remained undefeated in dual-meet competition Saturday, as both the men’ (3-0) and women (4-0) defeated Syracuse University at Competition Pool. The men won by a score of 134-107, while the women claimed a 139-92 decision.
BU coach Bill Smyth attributed the hot steak to preparation early in the week.
‘They know what their schedule is by Wednesday, and they know what their goals are,’ Smyth said of his athletes.’
Both squads earned seven first-place victories. Sophomore Arik Seiler and senior Andre Watson took home two individual wins apiece for the men, while seniors Eve Kinsella and Tess Waresmith and junior Brigette O’Shaughnessy each picked up two individual wins for the women.
In the men’s events, Seiler was the winner in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.95) and freshman Daniel Kempf finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.77), leading a sweep of the top three spots.
‘We couldn’t be happier for Daniel and our team couldn’t be prouder,’ Smyth said.’
Sophomore Matt Rickett (21.85) and freshman Sam Weinstein (22.30) finished second and third, respectively. Seiler also took top honors in the 100-yard freestyle (47.18). Sophomore Kyle Ernst picked up a victory for the Terriers in the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.17).
The men’s diving team excelled, as Watson led the way for BU with sweeps of the one-meter and three-meter springboards. Watson received a score of 310.50 on the 1M, while sophomore Tanner Knorr (246.60) and senior Alex Caesar (228.12) took second and third place, respectively. The trio swept the 3M with scores of 344.48, 286.50 and 239.78, respectively.’ ‘
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Kempf, Rickett, freshman Jackson Hill and Seiler finished the day with an exclamation point for the Terriers, winning in 3:08.40.
‘We really stress the importance of relays,’ Smyth said.
The women’s team got off to a fast start, taking the 200-yard medley relay in 1:47.78 to begin the meet. Freshmen Francesca Ferrante and Kristen Connors, junior Emily Munday and sophomore Kristen Tullis picked up the victory. With the win, Connors earned her first collegiate victory.’
Kinsella took first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.63) and sophomore Maria McIntyre claimed a victory in the 50-yard freestyle (24.50). O’Shaughnessy finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.46. Kinsella received her second win of the day in the 100-yard freestyle (52.75), while O’Shaughnessy notched her second victory in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.89) ‘-‘- the fastest time ever for a BU dual-meet.
‘That was a very inspiring swim,’ Smyth said. ‘It really motivated our team.’
The women’s diving team was just as dominant as the men, as Waresmith led sweeps of the 1M and 3M springboards. Waresmith scored a 309.83 on the 1M, while senior Alex Crerar (240.15) and sophomore Sarah Colton (221.70). The divers swept the 3M with scores of 290.03, 250.20 and 216.08, respectively.
