Sophomore Joel Senick won the 500-meter dash and freshman Shelby Walton won the 55-meter dash, as the Boston University men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their seasons Saturday at the Husky Winter Carnival at the Reggie Lewis Center.
It was Walton’s first collegiate victory, as she registered a time of 7.17 seconds.
‘She did a good job,’ BU coach Robyne Johnson said of Walton. ‘She ran fast. It was her first collegiate start and she won. She’s very excited.’
Senick ran a 1:03.55 in the 500m, topping a field of 30 runners.
‘He’s worked very hard and he’s enjoying the fruits of his labor,’ Johnson said.
The entire BU squad has been training in preparation for several meets in the coming weeks. Johnson is impressed with the team’s results as the athletes continue to train.
‘I’m very happy with the way the team is competing,’ Johnson said. ‘We are training through the meets and we’ll be training through Saturday’s meet as well, so I’m happy that we can enter meets and compete this early in the season.’
On the men’s side, junior Jeff Moreau finished second in the 1,000-meter run at 2:34.83 and ranked first among collegians in the event.
‘Jeff would have liked to run faster, but he was still happy with second,’ Johnson said.
Moreau still has an entire season ahead of him to cut down his times.
Senior Jason Nardella came in fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.02 seconds.’
The 4×400-meter relay team of freshman Kedzie Teller, junior Max Esposito, junior Mark Mazzochette and Senick finished fourth in 3:25.18. Esposito also came in seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.85. Mazzochette claimed eighth place in the 500m.
Senior Kodjo Wilder had the Terriers’ best finish in the field events with a long jump of 6.70 meters.’
Walton finished second in the 200-meter dash for the women’s team with a time of 25.57 ‘-‘- the best time among collegians. BU had four of the top seven finishers in the race. Freshman Jackie Dim (25.98) came in fourth, senior Erin Catarius (26.03) came in fifth and senior Edwina Clark (26.26) was seventh. Catarius also finished third in the 55m with a time of 7.30.
Senior Becky Marshburn claimed a second-place finish in the 500m, crossing the finish line in 1:18.77, while junior Casey Jordan came in seventh at 1:30.38.
Senior Katie Wieder was second in the 1,000m with a time of 2:56.83, one second behind the first-place finisher.
The women’s 4x400m relay team of Clark, Dim, Marshburn and sophomore Laura Martin grabbed second place with a time of 3:56.50.
In the women’s high jump, sophomore Karly Neveu finished second and matched a personal best by clearing the bar at 1.67 meters. Johnson attributed Neveu’s success to training and weightlifting.
‘The hard work has definitely paid off for her,’ Johnson said.
Junior Whitney Ford and Clark finished fourth and fifth in the long jump with distances of 5.46 meters and 5.42 meters, respectively.
Both the men’s and women’s teams showed signs that the Terriers will contend at a high level this season, an assertion Johnson agrees with.
‘We look forward to bigger and better things this season.’
