BU student hit by car near Agganis

A vehicle struck a Boston University graduate student in front of Agganis Arena Wednesday between 5 and 6 p.m.

The student, who had been crossing the outbound lane of Commonwealth Avenue on foot, was not seriously injured, BU Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jack St. Hilaire.

‘It appeared that she was crossing in a northerly direction, so she was coming toward Agganis Arena,’ he said. ‘Her injuries are non-life threatening.’

The student was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, St. Hilaire said. Boston Police Department conducted the investigation. Although BPD media relations refused to comment on the case, BPD officer Tim McCarthy said at the scene that the student was conscious after the accident.

College of Arts and Sciences sophomore Jenna Markowitz said she was walking to Student Village Phase II for a tour with a few friends when she saw the car hit the student.

‘As we were walking, I just heard this horrible screeching from the car brakes,’ Markowitz said.

‘It seemed like she got hit on the side,’ Markowitz said. ‘It seemed like her legs went out from under her. The way she was hit seemed pretty bad.’

Markowitz said the driver of the car reacted to the scene immediately.

‘He was pretty quick to get out,’ she said. ‘He called 911, and the ambulance was there within seconds.’

Markowitz said everyone at the scene was initially shocked into silence.

‘Everyone was in so much shock,’ Markowitz said. ‘Then, she just started screaming.’

‘I had seen someone get hit by a car my freshman year,’ Markowtiz said. ‘It’s not something you expect to see again.’

CAS sophomore Aly Crea said she was with Markowitz when she saw the accident happen.

‘She hit her head,’ Crea said. ‘We heard the sound when she hit the ground.’

However, Crea confirmed that the pedestrian was conscious when she was taken away in the ambulance.

‘I think she’s okay,’ Crea said. ‘I hope she’s okay.’
