In advance of Tuesday’s victory parade, I wanted to extend my hearty congratulations to the Boston University men’s hockey team for their stunning national championship win on Saturday night. I may be 1,000 miles and almost 20 years removed from BU and my customary place in section 8, row B, seat 16 at Walter Brown Arena, but my heart was in the Verizon Center as the never-say-die Terriers battled back to claim the national title in dramatic fashion.
Late in the third period, my thoughts drifted to a magical weekend years ago, when a small group of rabid Terrier fans struck out on a 2,800-mile odyssey to East Lansing, Mich. Driving through the night on a wing and a prayer, we knew that hope was not lost, that if we could somehow get to the game, we could help push our beloved Terriers on to victory despite long odds and a hostile environment at Michigan State University’s Munn Ice Arena. Watching the BU faithful on Saturday, it was great to see that same spirit and belief are alive and well. Terrier fans did themselves proud, holding out until the very end, cheering and screaming in support of our team.’
Down here in South Carolina, where hockey is mostly regarded as a Yankee oddity, I don’t get to follow my Terriers as much as I would like.’ But for a few hours on Saturday, the years melted away, and I was right back in the mix, pulling for my team and bursting with pride as they hoisted the well-earned national championship trophy. A perfect ending to an incredible season. Way to go, boys!
