South Campus accidents send 2 to hospital

First responders held up traffic in South Campus Friday night after two unrelated accidents hospitalized two people.

A pedestrian crossing the intersection of Mountfort Street and St. Mary’s Street in South Campus was struck by a white Kia Sportage at about 6:03 p.m. Friday, witnesses said. The victim was struck by the driver’s side of the vehicle after the driver applied his brakes and turned in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian, Boston Police Department spokesman Eddy Crispin said.

The pedestrian, described by witnesses as an elderly man, complained of pain on the side of the body the car hit. The driver, who refused to give his name, said the pedestrian also had a head injury.

‘He looked pretty fragile,’ College of Arts and Sciences junior Renee Jou, who witnessed the accident, said. ‘He just said that the side of his body hurt.’

Jou said the pedestrian was responsive and talking to responders.

The car was traveling eastbound at the intersection when it streaked to avoid hitting the pedestrian, Jou said. Jou was walking from Marsh Chapel when she saw the accident. The driver said he had a green light, but the pedestrian had continued walking.

The pedestrian was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Crispin said.

Earlier at Audubon Circle, a Honda Civic collided with a Ford Explorer in South Campus, sending an off-duty BPD officer to the hospital with minor injuries.

The collision took place at 5:29 p.m., and in addition to the officer, involved two other adults and two children, Patrolman Joe Kenneally said. The officer was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The officer was driving southbound on Park Drive when her car collided with the Honda, which was turning left westbound onto Beacon Street, Crispin said. Passengers in the Honda reported no injuries and its driver was issued a citation for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.
