I am somewhat concerned by the recent rash of “diversity”-related articles appearing in The Daily Free Press. Everything I have seen is so one-sided. Are we really going to try to address racial quotas over ensuring quality in our university’s faculty? The problem of underrepresentation is difficult, but I do not believe that Boston University needs to entice minorities with extra benefits. What happened to our so-called “post-racial” society? No doubt we have many challenges ahead in integrating the minority population, but these need to be handled in ways that do not potentially undermine our society by placing someone who may be less qualified than others into a position of influence. If we were talking about open discrimination, that would be a different case entirely. The university should neither turn down minority applicants nor encourage them to apply. If black and Hispanic professors are hired and are qualified, I say more power to them. But I still firmly believe that BU needs to live up to its principles and be colorblind, not overtly racist.
