LETTER: Race and gender relevant

As the organizer of the event at Cafe con Leche featuring Boston City Councilor Felix G. Arroyo, I wanted to provide my perspective on what took place at the forum Tuesday (“Councilor Arroyo encourages involvement, activisim at HTC,” March 3, p. 3). The story intimated that the councilor presented that “race and gender are not an impediment anymore” to achieve elected office or, more generally, success in our society.

Although the councilor did state that race and gender need not be an impenetrable barrier, he did make clear that race and gender still are relevant in our society. The main message in that part of the discussion was to work hard and always maintain integrity, to become involved in the community for betterment of our people. Even when a person can overcome the barriers that exist due to race and gender that does not mean that those barriers do not exist or did not need to be overcome.
