The No. 11/12 Boston University lacrosse team gave up a three-goal lead late in the second half on its way to losing a 7-6 heartbreaker in double overtime against No. 15/9 University of Notre Dame on Saturday.
The Fighting Irish controlled the game offensively for most of the overtime sessions, content to hold the ball and wait until the final 30 seconds to set up a play. Although the Terrier defense held strong in the first overtime and the first half of the second extra period, a free-position shot by senior attacker Gina Scioscia gave Notre Dame the win.
“Our defense played an awesome game today,” said senior goalie Rachel Klein. “We made some adjustments, got some unfortunate foul calls, and they had three eight-meters at the end of the game, but other than that I think our defense did a great job. [Senior midfielder] Jenny Martin and [junior midfielder] Corcoran Downey played a great game. Defensively we played a solid game. It just didn’t come out as we wanted.”
BU coach Liz Robertshaw echoed similar praise of her team’s defensive effort.
“I think they were great,” Robertshaw said. “I was really impressed by our defense today.”
Klein had another strong performance in net, making 11 saves to keep the Terriers ahead for much of the game. She ranks ninth in the nation in save percentage, saving 53.535 percent of the shots she has faced this season.
“She’s fantastic,” said senior captain Traci Landy. “I think she’s the best goaltender in the country. Today was a great day to show it. Whether she’s making the saves, making her clears, talking to the team, she was the glue that kept us together for most of the game.”
“Rachel Klein in cage was awesome,” Robertshaw said. “She was very focused. It’s hard to lose a game on a free position, and I know how badly Rachel feels, but the kid played awesome. For me, we have to make sure she doesn’t focus on that one goal that went in, but all the other great saves she had.”
In a low-scoring game, winning the little battles can spell the difference between a win and a loss &- winning the draws in sudden death overtime is especially crucial.
