COM ’09 alumna injured in Texas shooting

Mia Gant, a 2009 Boston University College of Communication alumna, is recovering after she was injured during an alleged white supremacist’s shooting spree Tuesday night in Wichita Falls, Texas, according to local reports.

The suspect, 22-year-old Ross William Muehlberger, allegedly killed one and injured three in addition to Gant before returning to his home and fatally shooting himself.

Gant, who is black, is in stable condition after being shot in the right hand and shoulder, according to reports.

The shooting began at Hastings Books and Entertainment, where Gant works. According to reports, the Wichita Falls Police Department received several calls shortly before 9:30 p.m. that a man at the bookstore had opened fire with a shotgun.

After allegedly injuring four women at Hastings, Muehlberger reportedly moved on to neighboring Tony’s Bar and fatally shot a fourth man. Police say he then returned home, locked himself in the bathroom and shot himself in the head, according to reports. He died in a local hospital early Wednesday morning.

Witnesses reported hearing Muehlberger say “white power” as he fired, and also said he went behind the counter where Gant was working before shooting her there.

Three of the injured women were black and the fourth was Hispanic, while the man who was killed was white, according to reports.

Gant, who is a former Daily Free Press contributing writer, was an active member in her sorority Delta Delta Delta, Colleges Against Cancer, the Fashion and Retail Association and the Native American Students Association.

While at BU, she worked as an editorial intern at both Boston Magazine and Misstropolis.com.

At press time, over 1,500 people had joined a Facebook group called “Prayer for Mia Gant.”

WFPD officials and Gant’s family could not be reached for comment at press time.
