Unregistered sex offender arrested at Mugar Library

An unregistered sex offender was arrested in Mugar Memorial Library Monday afternoon, a BU Police Department official said.

The man, a 33-year-old former Boston University student, was taken into custody at about 3:30 p.m. after Mugar security called campus police about a suspicious individual in the library, Sgt. Jeffery Burke of the BUPD said.

Initially, Mugar security was concerned that the suspect, who they had spotted at the library several times before, was behind a string of recent laptop thefts around campus.

According to Burke, however, the suspect was not arrested under suspicion of theft, but rather because of his unregistered status. Even so, Burke noted the suspects' appearances at Mugar coincided with several recent reports of stolen laptops.

The suspect violated requirements for sex offenders when he moved residences from one area of Boston to another without notifying police, Burke said. After his arrest, the suspect was held by BUPD until he made bail the same day.
