Tax troubles for 2 others on state ballot

State Treasurer Tim Cahill isn't the only ballot candidate with tax troubles, The Boston Globe reported on Thursday.

Lt. Gov. Tim Murray and candidate for state auditor Guy Glodis both did not pay taxes on interest income earned through their campaigns, the candidates admitted to The Globe.

The news came a day after Cahill, an independent candidate for governor, told The Globe that his campaign had also failed to pay about $15,000 in taxes, which he said he has since repaid.

Both Glodis and Murray said they would repay the back taxes. Glodis' campaign sent a check for $2,568 to the Department of Revenue Wednesday, although it claimed it was exempt from federal taxes &- something the Globe said wasn't accurate.

Glodis' refusal of any wrongdoing prompted harsh criticism from his rivals for the Sept. 14 Democratic primary.

"By now, the voters must be asking: What is wrong with this guy?" said Suzanne Bump, a Democratic candidate for auditor, said on her website. "And, how can we elect Guy Glodis, with this record of flagrant disregard for laws relative to political, public and personal finance, to a position of public trust, especially that of State Auditor? I know that I am."

Glodis should resign his post as Worcester County sheriff, Democratic auditor candidate Mike Lake said in a video on his website.

"We are running for state auditor &- the watchdog of state government," Lake said. "The office that upholds the integrity of state government."

Just two weeks earlier, Glodis had garnered criticism for not disclosing the source of a $20,000 loan from a hedge fund manager convicted in a $13 million investment fraud.
