Campaign emails suggest that independent candidate for governor Tim Cahill benefited from a million-dollar ad campaign for the Massachusetts Lottery that was funded by taxpayers, in the latest of the candidate’s public woes.
Evidence for these most recent allegations came in emails released Wednesday by Cahill’s former aides.
In the emails, advisers for Cahill’s campaign were allegedly determining details of the advertisements for the state agency.
This new information came out as part of a lawsuit Cahill brought against formers staffers who he said pushed his former running mate Paul Loscocco to drop out of the race.
Cahill accused those same advisers of attempting to sabotage his campaign by handing over confidential information to Republican candidate for governor Charlie Baker. The advisers responded that they are being accused because they know about illegal actions the Cahill campaign has taken in collaboration with the state treasury staff.
In a statement by Cahill’s campaign, the independent candidate and his advisers attempted to dissuade voters from believing the accusation.
“There was absolutely no connection between the campaign and the state lottery, which had already planned an ad campaign in the fall, as it does every year,” the statement read.
