Fenway Park to undergo renovations in baseball off-season

A number of improvements to Fenway Park will be completed during the off-season as part of a 10-year plan to renovate the famous Boston landmark in time for it’s 100th anniversary in 2012, the Boston Red Sox announced Tuesday.

The “Year X Fenway Park Improvements” will include replacing, repairing and waterproofing seats in right field, adding three new video displays and scoring systems, expanding the concession areas and upgrading the Gate D concourse, according to a statement by the Sox.

This year’s renovations will cost about $40 million. Over the 10-year time period, $285 million will be spent, making it the most costly investment that has ever been made on the ballpark.

“With more seats and more standing room, wide open concourses, a reinforced structure, new and improved restroom facilities and many more food and beverage options for our fans, Fenway Park remains vibrant and appealing leading up to its 100th Anniversary in 2012,” said Larry Lucchino, the president and CEO of the Red Sox, in a statement.

Past renovations as part of the 10-year plan included the installation of new seats in the stadium, the waterproofing and repair of concrete and the addition of a new sound system.

One of the goals of the improvements is to increase capacity by at least 10 percent by the time the renovation program is finished.

The annual improvements began in 2002 when New England Sports Ventures purchased the Red Sox. The company promised to save and improve the park in order to ensure that it could house the Red Sox for the next 30 to 40 years.
