The good news just keeps rolling in for the No. 3 Boston University women’s hockey team, owners of a 10 game winning streak and first place in Hockey East. On Tuesday, junior forward Jenn Wakefield and freshman forward Marie-Philip Poulin were named HE Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Poulin and Wakefield lead the Terriers (18-2-3, 8-1-3 Hockey East) in scoring with 38 and 37 points through 19 games. Wakefield’s 19 goals put her one short of tying Melissa Anderson’s single-season program record for goals, and Poulin is tied with Boston College senior Kelli Stack for the Hockey East scoring lead.
Nationally, Poulin and Wakefield rank sixth and ninth in points, and Poulin is still tied for the lead in shorthanded goals with three. Wakefield also ranks second in game-winning goals, with five.
In two conference wins last weekend against BC (14-4-4, 8-2-2 HE) and University of Maine, Wakefield put up six points on three goals and three assists. Poulin had four points in the two games, including an assist on senior forward Jenelle Kohanchuk’s game-winning goal against Maine (9-11-4, 3-7-2 HE) and a power-play goal against BC. She also won 21 of the 25 face-offs she took against Maine for an 84 percent success rate.
This is the fourth time Poulin has been named Rookie of the Week. She also earned Rookie of the Month honors for October and was Player of the Week on Oct. 18. Wakefield has been named Player of the Week once before, on Dec. 13, and was Player of the Month for December.
BU’s win over Maine was their 11th home victory of the season, a program record set with three home games still left to play. The Terriers will look to reach another milestone when they return to action on Saturday against the University of Vermont: their next win will be the 100th in program history.
