After a three-game winning streak, the Boston University lacrosse team is now on a two-game losing streak after a 10-7 loss against cross-town rival No. 14 Boston College Wednesday.
Now back at the .500 plateau, the Terriers (6-6, 2-1), a team that had high expectations entering this season, are struggling to make everything work for them.
Sophomore attack Danielle Etrasco led the Terriers with three unassisted goals.
Senior midfielder Corcoran Downey and junior attack Molly Swain both added goals, while junior attack Catie Tilton and freshman attack Elizabeth Morse each had one goal and one assist. Freshman goalkeeper Christina Sheridan made four saves.
BU went 15-for-17 on clears and 1-for-4 on free-position shots while BC (9-5) went 12-for-14 and 1-for-7, respectively. The Terriers won the draw control battle with 10 to BC’s nine, but they were beaten 17-15 in ground balls.
The Eagles came out fast to start the game by scoring three goals in the first 12 minutes. It was not until 18:38 into the match that BU finally got on the scoreboard when Swain scored off of a Morse assist.
After BC tallied another goal, Downey drew BU within two goals at 4-2 with 6:50 left in the first half on an assist from Tilton. Etrasco scored the first of her three goals on the day after another Eagle goal, making the game 5-3.
It seemed like BU would go into the half down by two, but Brooke Blue scored for the Eagles with just eight seconds left in the first half, burdening the Terriers a 6-3 deficit.
However, the second half started in similar fashion, with BC scoring in the first 13 seconds of play. The Terriers answered quickly with goals by Tilton – assisted by junior attack Hannah Frey – and Etrasco to make the game 7-5.
Just when it seemed as though the Terriers were poised to make a comeback, the Eagles took control of the game, tallying three more goals to make the score 10-5 with only 7:13 left to play.
Etrasco and Morse answered with a goal each, but the Terriers were unable to overcome the five-goal deficit, losing by a final score of 10-7.
BC proved to be a tough, and ultimately unsuccessful, test for BU, but the team can look to redeem itself with a win against an even tougher challenge in an undefeated No. 10 University at Albany squad on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Nickerson Field.
Thus far, BU is 1-3 against ranked opponents and 2-1 in America East Conference play this season, and this game will likely play a large part in deciding the AE regular season championship.
