Although the Boston University lacrosse team’s statistical leaders stand out as some of the top players in the conference, they’re not the only ones who have contributed to the Terriers’ success thus far. Junior attack Hannah Frey may not boast the top numbers on the team, but she allowed BU to compete in Saturday’s 12-11 loss to No. 7/10 University at Albany until the final seconds.
From the team’s stat sheet, it appears that sophomore attack Danielle Etrasco is the star of the team. Etrasco is the team leader in goals with 39 on the season. She is second in AE with an average of three goals per game, and fifth in free-position goals with seven. She also has a second-best 30 draw controls.
However, despite the fact that she doesn’t always earn a spot on the score sheet, Frey plays a key role for the Terriers.
As a freshman, Frey started 13 games while tallying 19 goals and four assists. She also gathered eight ground balls and 10 draw controls on her way to being a unanimous selection for the AE All-Rookie Team.
In her sophomore year, Frey started only four games, but appeared in 19 for the Terriers. She was third on the team in goals with 27. She had nine draw controls and five ground balls.
This season, Frey has appeared in all 13 games, but she has only started one. She is second on the team with 27 goals, making her likely to surpass her goal count from last season. She also has five ground balls and eight draw controls.
Compared to Etrasco, Frey scores on 52.2 percent of her attempts while Etrasco scores on 53.4 percent. In addition, Frey is 10th in the AE for goals with an average of two goals per game.
Even though she has only started one game this season, Frey has come up big often, scoring almost as often as team leader Etrasco. She displayed a lot of her skill this Saturday in the Terriers’ loss to Albany.
In the team’s high point of the season at the start of its three game winning streak, Frey was on pace with Etrasco. Against Yale University on March 23, Frey and Etrasco each scored four goals in the 12-5 win.
In the game against Binghamton University to start AE play on March 26, Frey and Etrasco scored four goals each in the 15-6 victory. Finally, in the game against University of Maryland-Baltimore County on April 2, Frey tallied another three points with a goal and two assists while Etrasco scored five goals with one assist in the 13-9 win.
In Saturday’s loss against Albany, Frey outdid Etrasco – and every other Terrier – in the goals column when she scored a career-high six for BU during the 12-11 loss. She stepped up and kept the Terriers in the game, and without her stellar performance, BU could have had trouble keeping pace with Albany. She scored three unassisted and three assisted goals to earn AE Player of the Game honors.
While BU still lost, it was very close and came down to the last few seconds. Even though Etrasco had her now-normal three-goal game, Frey’s performance is an example of how behind the stat sheet, there are players who are key components of the team.
