Off The Record Week One: Saba’s Picks

Off The Record is a weekly MUSE installment exploring the favorite music of the Daily Free Press editorial staff. Each week a different editor will pick their five favorite songs. Week one features our Editor-In-Chief, Saba Hamedy. Enjoy.

Welcome, new FreeP readers! Hope you’re enjoying our annual Matriculation issue and getting well acquainted with Boston University, aka your home for the next four years. The MUSE editor Chris approached me to kick-off this new series for the section featuring editors’ favorite songs.

But before I tell you my top five music picks, I’d like to note that my favorite songs are constantly changing. I suffer from music ADD and I pretty much listen to anything ranging from Bach to Belle & Sebastian. So just know, these top five are constantly changing and may even be outdated by the time you read this. They are also in no particular order because I can’t narrow it down that much to my all-time favorite song. It’s impossible for indecisive people like me.

“Set Fire to The Rain” – Adele. I know at this point most of you who don’t own Adele’s album only know her as the annoying artist with the song “Rolling in the Deep” that radio stations play every five minutes. However, I’m here to say this should not discourage you from listening to her. I have a girl crush on Adele. Her voice is soothing, powerful and makes everything better.

“Otherside” – Red Hot Chili Peppers. I can’t say I’m 100 percent in love with their new hit that came out this summer but I will tell you nothing beats classic RHCP songs. They make me think of home (California) and for this, I will always love them.

“Loca” – Shakira. Though I love all of this half Arabic, half Latina singer’s songs, this one in particular has served as my gymspiration for the past year. Her hips don’t lie and her voice doesn’t disappoint. Another girl crush. If Shakira, Adele and Beyonce teamed up and serenaded me, I think my life would be complete.

“You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me” – Smokey Robinson. Any FreePer will tell you this song has been played in the office far too many times because I’m so obsessed with it. It’s my go-to oldies song because Smokey can do no wrong. However, The Beatles song “In My Life” and the entire “Remember the Titans” soundtrack are definitely runner-ups in favorite oldies song category.

“The Way We Get By” – Spoon. This has been my ringtone for the past year and I’m still not sick of it. I’ve been obsessed with Spoon since the seventh grade when they appeared on one of my favorite shows, “The O.C.” Since then, I’ve seen them twice in concert and only grown more obsessed.
