We have Southie, Whitey Bulger, movies about us like The Departed and the Celtics. Boston is full of Irish heritage and pride. Bostonians eat up all things Ireland, and next Tuesday at The House of Blues, are treated to the Celtic-flavored rock band Flogging Molly.
The seven-piece band is embarking on their eighth annual Green 17 tour, starting in Detroit on Friday and culminates on St. Patrick’s Day in Arizona.
In their upcoming tour, Flogging Molly will probably borrow a lot from their most recent release Speed of Darkness, their fifth studio album that was released in May of last year.
The album is heavy in its dealings with themes of economic depression. Frontman Dave King and his wife, violinist Bridget Regan, have lived in Detroit for the last couple of years and the sounds of the downtrodden American city is certainly evident all over the album. The album is not as raucous as previous ones; Flogging Molly slows down a bit, and turns up the guitar.
The first two singles from the album pretty much outline the story: “Don’t Shut ‘Em Down”and “Revolution.” The songs are anthems for the country’s economic downturn with lines like: “I spent twenty-seven years in this factory/And the boss man says, ‘Hey you’re not what we need’/The penguins in the suits they know nothing but greed/It’s a solitary life when you’ve mouths to feed/ But who cares about us?”
Probably best known for the stirring “Drunken Lullabies,” Flogging Molly is sure to whip the House of Blues in to a drunken Irish frenzy. The band is loud and fun and the show is sure to be a craic.
