Timeflies at The House of Blues

Surprisingly for a relatively unknown band, the line for the House of Blues reached all the way down the block Thursday night. Girls and guys of various ages donned neon color tank tops and t-shirts in the chilly September air. The excitement was palpable as the eager crowd listened to the band’s newest YouTube video on their phones.

Finally the doors opened, and all three floors of the eclectic looking venue were instantaneously filled. People were right up against each other, pushing and shoving to get closer to the stage eagerly waiting for Cal Shapiro and Rob “Rez” Resnick, the members of Timeflies, a self proclaimed “Electro Hip Pop Dub something” group, to grace the stage.

Being no strangers to Boston (the duo got their start while studying at Tufts University) the expectations were high that they would show their old stomping grounds a good time.

Having become increasingly famous for their Timeflies Tuesdays videos, a new video each week that showcases Cal’s impressive freestyle capabilities and Rez’s mix of sampled songs and “sick beats,” the crowd went crazy at 9:30 p.m. when the beautiful boys of Brooklyn finally came out.

The sardine-packed floor became a frenzy of elbows, pushes and hair-pulling as the group on the floor tried to get as close as possible to Cal’s outstretched hands and serenading eyes. They went crazy for the group’s original hits like, “Faded,” “Stunner,” “All Night” and “Until the Sunrise.” Along with the original material off their EP, The Scotch Tape and mix-tape, Under the Influence, the boys performed some of their most beloved YouTube hits as well.

After an hour, the boys bid farewell to their adoring fans and repeated the refrain heard throughout the night about how much they love Boston. However, the crowd hadn’t had enough of the massive talent and demanded an encore.

The whole auditorium echoed, “Under the Sea! Under the Sea! Under the Sea!” the original YouTube video that put Cal and Rez on the map —a tantalizing mix of Disney’s The Little Mermaid’s “Under the Sea,” with Rez’s beats mixed in and a catchy and quick-witted freestyle courtesy of Cal. The crowd blew-up beach ball “bubbles” through the air and shouted along with the lyrics.

The crowd was feeling it and with their faces moist with perspiration, they began to file out of the concert hall. Though the wait to see the band was a little more than two and a half hours, once the music started, we were reminded that time can fly when you’re having fun.
