Transit Police are investigating a Green Line collision on Huntington Avenue that left three people injured Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority spokesman Joe Pesaturo said two passengers and one trolley operator were injured in the crash when the two E Line trolley cars collided on Monday at 4 p.m.
The victims, who were not identified, were transported to a nearby hospital, Pesaturo said.
The crash is a result of human error, he said.
More than two dozen MBTA Transit Police officials and operation and maintenance workers responded to the call and went to the site Monday afternoon.
Authorities shut down service along Huntington Avenue after the Brigham Circle accident, said Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald.
The E Line likely will not be functioning until Tuesday, Pesaturo said.
Pesaturo said trolleys are running from the Northeastern University stop inbound while repairs are made on the rest of the E Line.
Huntington Avenue was closed to traffic between Longwood Avenue and Brigham Circle. Eastbound lanes were opened to traffic at about 6:15 p.m.
Boston resident Alison Pultinas said she went to the scene after hearing helicopters and other sounds.
Pultinas said the Brigham Circle area is poorly designed and often leads to problems with trolleys, including the amount of space the lamppost takes up, the conditions of the platforms and the amount of room trains have when they turn.
“The major problem was they can’t seem to figure out how to continue the trains past Brigham Circle and how many trains are coming through, how many trains are turning back,” Pultinas said. “The platform is not wide enough to accommodate passengers, both inbound and outbound, and when people walk down in the middle of the road to get inbound because they don’t understand.”
