Second armed robberies suspect in custody

Police arrested a second suspect in connection to a series of armed robberies near Boston University’s Charles River Campus Friday, police said.

Boston University Police Department Chief Thomas Robbins confirmed a 17-year old male was arrested Friday afternoon outside the city of Brookline.

“He’ll be brought in to Brookline Police Department, processed, arraigned and tried for two armed robberies,” Robbins said.

He said the suspect will be tried as an adult.

Robbins said the arrest was made after a robbery task force of BUPD, Brookline PD and Boston PD used photographic evidence of the three suspects to investigate and identify the suspect.

“[The task force] followed up a lead on a photograph,” he said. “We did some legwork with the police department going to different locations and someone recognized him, so we arrested him.”

Robbins said the suspect is thought to be involved in two of the four armed robberies since Sept. 23.

“Brookline and Boston University Police believe this suspect was involved in the middle two, [Sept. 25] and [Oct. 5] robberies,” said BU spokesman Colin Riley.

The first suspect turned himself in to Brookline PD and was arrested Thursday.

Robbins said the first suspect was a juvenile.

“He was arraigned in Brookline District Court [today] and he is being held without bail,” he said.

BU announced a $10,000 reward Wednesday for information leading to arrest. Police also released a surveillance video of the suspects Wednesday.

Riley said BUPD, Brookline and Boston Police were able to work together to identify and arrest the suspect.

“Not only did they get together to meet with people at [BU], but they were working closely after the [first] individual was arrested last night to continue the investigation,” he said. “They were able to identify additional suspects and made that arrest and let’s hope that soon there will be a third suspect in custody.”
