The midterm elections for this year are quickly approaching, and with Republican control of the Senate, House and presidency, voting for your representatives has never been more important. Many Americans are unaware of just how important their vote is in these elections.
A new survey was released that showed the importance of undecided voters or people who do not vote often. It was found that though the Democrats are favored to take the House this year, it could swing either way and is a very close race.
Additionally, Republicans have a chance to take the white working class in the North, and the Democrats could potentially gain the upper hand in the Sun Belt districts, which is generally comprised of the southern portion of the United States. Both of these potential outcomes will be determined by the undecided voters.
The 2016 election is a prime example of the importance of voting: I never thought Trump would win the election, but because of the people who did not vote or were unsure as to who they would vote for, Trump was able to take the swing states.
Voting on senators and representatives is just as important because they are a large group of people who can either support the Trump administration or control the craziness that it has turned into.
Unfortunately, more often than not, the incumbent representative gets reelected because many people do not do research on the other people running and just vote for the person they know was already in office.
This is not the way to do things this time. A majority of the people in office right now have been complacent or supportive in the Trump administration, and those people need to go. This country needs new people who will help lead America in the right direction.
Young people in America do not go out and vote in the same numbers that older Americans do, and it is a severe problem. It is also one of the reasons America is a joke to many other countries around the world.
The right to vote in America is not just a privilege, it is a duty. It is not something you should consider doing just because you can, it should be seen as something you are supposed to do and expected to take part in as your duty in America.
To look at it any other way is to diminish the importance of a democracy and the importance of electing people who truly represent us. If you look at Congress, it is not representative of the American people. It is a lot of old, white men.
Obviously, there are many reasons for this that go beyond votership, but you can start to fix this problem by going out and voting for what you believe in. The country is run by the Trump administration because we let the older generations take over the voting polls.
These midterm elections are the chance to take the country back though, and in turn prevent things such as climate change and the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which are things Trump has made clear he intends on doing.
It is not just the reputation of America at stake in these elections, it is the future choices of women or the future of our children who will have to deal with a dying planet. We must always vote with the future in mind.
Go out and vote this November for the people who will actually make America great again. Many college campuses have voter registration booths, and there is a ton of information regarding how to register, even if you are away from home.
Learn about who is running and go perform your civic duty as an American. It has never been so important.
