Four films to get you into the spring spirit

As the first day of spring rolled around this past Thursday, I was thinking about things I could do to get myself in the mood for the season. So, I’m here to share some films I’ve been watching as spring arrives.

Each one has hints of spring in their own ways, but they always know how to make me excited for the seasons to change. Here are four recommendations to help you get into the spring spirit!

Emma Hart | Graphic Artist

“Little Women”

I originally saw a play of “Little Women” before watching the film, but when I finally got around to the film version, I was impressed. It features many detailed shots, vibrant colors and scenic settings.

A popular scene from this film showcases Jo standing in a garden where Laurie professes his love to her. Although the conversation is bittersweet, Jo and Laurie walk through an array of bright greenery. While the film addresses one of its major plot points, the setting makes it feel more spring-like.

The film’s color palette is also rich in its spring tones. There are many warm and earthy colors that bring together a beautiful spring-like landscape.

Director Greta Gerwig is phenomenal as she incorporates both natural light and vibrant colors into her films. She is able to make scenes feel more organic and lifelike to the audience, so they can enjoy their mostly happy stories.

“Pride and Prejudice”

This film is a classic that takes place in rural England, containing a lot of natural lighting and greenery as well, similar to “Little Women.”

The cinematography in itself is just beautiful. Multiple shots of gardens and greenery are included to make this film look more appealing to an audience.

Main characters Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet interact in a popular location, Stourhead in Wiltshire, while it’s raining for the film’s climax. Stourhead holds a beautiful structure called the Temple of Apollo, which is surrounded by gardens. This is where Mr. Darcy professes his love to Elizabeth but is rejected by her because she feels betrayed. The scene is passionate, and its surroundings make it feel more vulnerable.

I think it’s always exciting to turn on a slow-burn romance like “Pride and Prejudice” during the spring just because the film does this style so well. You’re at the edge of your seat for the entire film, waiting for something to happen — and when it finally does, it’s so worth it.

“The Princess Bride”

Although more of a throwback, this film still feels relevant to me. It has elements of both whimsy and romance that tie together really well. This specific type of film, a romantic adventure, always helps lift up my mood.

The iconic scene of Westley, the main protagonist, drinking the poison and tricking his enemy to his death will always amuse me. Even though the interaction is serious, somehow, the physical comedy of the scene makes it silly to watch. I always laugh when watching this scene specifically.

Westley’s lover, Buttercup, in the film owns a farm surrounded by fields. The old stone house and wooden stables give the area more of a rustic look, but the field is still captivating. The light from the sun shines into the scenes that take place at the farm due to its vast open fields and presents the beauty that nature in the spring has to offer.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”

Ferris Bueller’s outgoing nature is a perfect reason to watch this film in the spring. As the weather starts to get warmer, it’s exciting to turn on “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” to see an unbelievable adventure.

Ferris is the perfect example of a bold, outgoing and charismatic character with lots of confidence. His character appeals well to an audience through his interactions in the film.

I specifically like the scene where Ferris travels to Chicago. Ferris somehow ending up in a parade with everyone singing along to the song “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles is such an interesting plot point to follow. It’s not something you would expect a normal person to do, but since it’s Ferris, it’s fun to watch.

With Ferris’ many adventures, this is a perfect film to watch to get in the mood for going out as the weather gets warmer.

These are perfect additions to any upcoming films to watch if you’re not in the spring mood yet. I hope they give you some excitement for the season ahead!
