‘My friends are artsy.’
When I meet students outside of COM who are interested in spending time with me and my friends, that’s the warning I give them.
I don’t want my artsy friends who are reading this to think I’m ashamed of them, that couldn’t be any farther from the truth.’ I just have an uncanny ability to recognize who might be uncomfortable interacting with our social group.’
Let’s be honest, film students can be intimidating when they talk about filmmaking.’ And that’s all that my ‘artsy’ friends talk about when they’re not watching films, listening to records on vinyl, painting, writing, or composing bad music (the triumvirate that brings you this column also forms the band The Nutrition Facts).
It’s all because a career in artistic expression isn’t just a career choice’hellip;it’s a lifestyle.’ We are constantly and actively seeking new artistic discoveries and methods of expressing ourselves in our free time, because you can’t teach artistic expression in school.’
A career in motion pictures not only requires one to create art, but it also requires one to know the brief history of this medium and other mediums that may be incorporated into a film.
I’d like to congratulate Evan Puschak and Sam Stratton for their exceptional contributions, but I challenge them to make their future contributions more accessible to students, regardless of interest or major.’
In his first article, Evan encouraged our readers to be wary of those who might criticize the serious pursuit of a personal goal.’ I agree with him, but I’d like to spin it a bit.’ I encourage our readers to be wary of us.’ Treat our words as sparks that may ignite an interest in film and/or why we love it and take it so seriously.’
But, please, do not let us pressure you into thinking your tastes should be more complex.’ If you love Jurassic Park because you enjoy watching Jeff Goldblum fight dinosaurs and thought the music was epic, that’s a beautiful thing!’
It may not give you any additional enjoyment to know how the crew animated the dinosaurs or which composer did the film’s score, but you may like to know the last ten movies Jeff Goldblum has been in, and we can help you with that.
