Even after resigning from his position as Student Union president due to academic problems, College of Communication senior Michael Moffo said he plans to continue to work with the Union and help further some of the initiatives he promoted during his time in office.
Moffo said he hopes to work with the Union as its liaison to City Hall and further the professional relationship he has established with City Councilor Mike Ross (Back Bay, Fenway).
“I have personally been able to establish a pretty good alliance and friendship with Mike Ross through trying to open up a general communication with City Hall,” Moffo said. “I hopefully would be acting in very much a similar vein as when I was president in that respect.”
Moffo said his resignation will allow him more time to more thoroughly work with the Union and update its constitution.
“The Union constitution is riddled with vagaries and needs a serious look,” Moffo said. “Hopefully, by the end of the year, this administration will be able to leave the legacy of a revamped constitution.”
New Union President Zachary Coseglia said Moffo will play a role in reviewing the constitution when the Union begins to examine possible constitutional changes later in the year. He said he would consider making Moffo chairman of the review committee.
Moffo said though he tried to work on the constitution while he was in office, it is such a big job that he didn’t have the time necessary to focus on the real problems in the document and find adequate solutions.
“The problem I found when I was president was that I had so many things on my plate,” he said. “It’s something you really need to pore over and think about.”
Moffo said he plans to look at other colleges’ systems to help find the best direction for BU’s Union constitution.
Coseglia, a COM senior, said he also plans on keeping Moffo around to work with City Hall.
“I want to make it clear to the student body that he hasn’t abandoned them,” Coseglia said. “I do plan to keep Mike involved in the process simply because he is such an invaluable resource.”
Coseglia said he will look into creating an unofficial position for Moffo, though he did not specify in what capacity.
While Moffo said he will be present at Monday’s first Union meeting of the semester, he does not plan to address the Senate regarding his resignation.
“If I’m going to be there, it’ll be as a liaison to City Hall,” he said. “I’m not going to be there as outgoing president.”
Ross is scheduled to speak to the Senate Monday. Moffo said he wants to be there to listen to the senators’ discussion with Ross and to hear what he has to say.
“I have an interest in being there to talk to Mike [Ross] and see how that goes,” he said.
