Women’s Tennis Splits In Weekend Midwest Road Trip

The Boston University women’s tennis team was outmatched against No. 40 Ohio State University on Friday in Columbus. The 7-0 loss to the Buckeyes was the Terriers third loss of the season.

The Buckeyes feature three players ranked in the top 120 in the nation, and BU was not able to handle the Buckeyes’ talented assault. Ohio State’s Monica Rincon, the 54th-ranked singles player in the nation, took down BU’s No. 1 seed, senior Christina Causway, in straight sets. Sophomore Lindsey Dynof lost to Erica Fisk, ranked 48th, and fellow sophomore Elena deMendoza lost to Sadhaf Perez, ranked 119th.

Doubles action did not yield much more success for the Terriers, who were shutout. The three pairs fell with relative ease, with no team able to do any better than 8-3.

“They are a tough team, and we wanted to give them a good match,” said assistant coach Chrissy Cerretani. “Singles did pretty well, but doubles play gave us some problems.”

The team had a match against the University of Cincinnati the very next day, and it did not seem to be feeling any ill effects from the previous day’s thrashing. BU handed Cincinnati its fourth loss in a row, 4-3.

“We expected a tough match. It’s always tough to play a back-to-back, but I thought the girls were ready,” Cerretani said.

Dynof and Silvia Guglielmi led the way for BU, scoring victories of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-3, respectively. Causway was huge, too, stealing a gritty win over Cristina Reyes, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.

“After the first set I had some doubt,” Causway said. “I felt out of it. Then coach [Lesley Sheehan] walked over and talked to me, and instantly I was back in it. I started winning a few more points after that.”

Once again, however, the doubles matches gave the Terriers problems. They were swept by the Bearcats in all three matches.

BU held on for a 4-3 win, a measure of revenge for the school’s athletic program after the 90-52 pounding suffered against Cincinnati in the NCAA basketball tournament the night before. BU looks to follow up the Cincinnati win when it takes on Brown University tomorrow.
