Natalia Imbruglia is back. The one-hit Australian wonder has once again returned to the U.S. shores after her last album Left of the Middle. Not that anyone would remember her last album because the only reason it stayed in the US is because it had a corny breakup song called “Torn.” Yes, your fears have come true, she has come back across the Pacific with her second album named White Lilies Island.
White Lilies Island, is about as nonsensical and foolish as the title is. Imbruglia manages to ruin most songs either with asinine lyrics or music that sounds like she hit the Samba button on her Sony keyboard.
If anyone can stomach getting to the middle of the album, which is quite difficult given the wretched profoundness attempted in the first song alone, three decent songs can be found. The first single from White Lilies Island, “Wrong Impression”, is the only song that can be described as good. While it does have resemblance to her only other hit, “Torn”, it is still the best the new album can offer.
“Goodbye” is a sappy breakup song but it remains the second song of the tolerable trilogy. The last of the decent songs is “Everything Goes”; again, it is sappy and cheesy.
After that, the annoying level rises too far to warrant description, except the worst moment of all, which may cause laughter but mostly wincing. The song “Butterflies” has mediocre music and the chorus of, “Butterflies, butterflies, cut the stomach out and hand it over.”
Imbruglia never quite hits the mark in any song on White Lilies Island; she misses just enough on each one that it is impossible to expect anything better on future albums.
