I am a BU’72 grad and had lived at West Campus for a period of time while at BU,this was in Silbers first years at the University. For those who don’t remember dorm life at that time let me initate you. West Campus at that time was wide open with an anything goes attitude . The doors were open to the public and no one was challenged as to why they were there. At any given moment you could find strangers wandering the halls as well as homeless people and armed drug dealers. Drugs and alcohol were the norm as well as a very casual attitude towards sex. Even though I was a child of the sixties I found a lot of this behavior to cause concern, I have always enjoyed feeling safe where I was living and I didn’t feel safe during this time at West Campus. I have been following the guest policy issue through The Daily Free Press and find that maybe John Silber is on the right track. The first time I heard him speak was at West Campus in 1971 and at that time I did not agree with everything he said but I knew that I was in the presence of one of the smartest and most eloquent individuals that I would ever come across. To add a little perspective let me tell you that I work on a college campus I am in my 50’s and I have a 17 year old daughter who is visiting college campuses this summer in search of the right school and from the perspective of a parent, controls are not such a bad thing when we are talking about the well being of my daughter.
