I have always looked forward to the latest creations by staff illustrator Lauren Saul. Upon the publication of “Rhoda,” a cartoon strip about a silly pooch that attends college, I was immediately in stitches. Ms. Saul’s style has reached such refinement that it is among the ranks of the everlasting classic, “Archie.” Her skill may even supersede that of “Bazooka Joe.” This cuter-than-ever doggy doodle absolutely blows my mind when I see the crazy situations she is placed in and how Ms. Saul uses her subtle, yet genius comic sense to get Rhoda out safe.
Until now, I have been hailing “Rhoda” as a light-hearted alternative to the rude and raunchy “Iggy and Rolf.” I need not remind your audience of the filth that was expelled from those boys’ dirty mouths.
I fear that “Rhoda” is no longer the bar-of-soap-in-the-mouth that this campus needs. In Ms. Saul’s most recent installation (“Rhoda,” Jan. 28, pg.13), Rhoda goes to a party where her non-canine friend warns her of our unequal male-to-female ratio. In the midst of their conversation, Rhoda is violently yanked away from her friend only to be harassed by wild dancing boys. When she returns, all she can mutter is the boy’s mention of “doggy style.”
I am disgusted and highly insulted by Ms. Saul’s implication that the male population at BU is so sex-crazed that we would commit bestiality with college-going dogs. That is truly gross! I demand that she write an official apology for the outrageous undertones of her comic strip.
