Terriers fall to Vermont in AE championship, 83-70

The Boston University men’s basketball team will not be going dancing after all this season.

The University of Vermont never lost its lead and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in school history with an 83-70 victory over BU at Patrick Gymnasium in the America East championship game Saturday.

Vermont’s senior forward Marqus Blakely showed why he should have been named the AE Player of the Year for the third time in his career by scoring 24 points, grabbing 18 rebounds and adding five assists. Senior guard Nick Vier continued to be a “BU killer,” contributing 15 points and connecting on all four of his shots from behind the 3-point line.

Senior guard Corey Lowe led all BU players with 24 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Sophomore forward Jake O’Brien contributed 17 points and four boards, while senior guard Carlos Strong poured in 11 points. Junior forward John Holland failed to show up in a crucial game, as he went 3-of-11 from the field and netted just nine points.

The Terriers, who managed to cut their deficit to a single point during the second half, were looking to make their first appearance in the Big Dance since 2002, but instead, it will be the Catamounts who will represent AE in March Madness.
