The Boston University Community Task Force has suggested renovations for Myles Standish Hall and the construction of a Student Village III as possible projects that would be planned following the completion of the East Campus Student Center, BU officials said.
Vice President of Operations Gary Nicksa said in an email interview that the Task Force has considered the two projects as options that could be included in the Charles River Campus 2012 to 2021 Institutional Master Plan.
Nicksa said, however, that building and renovation plans for Student Village III and Myles are not definite at this phase of the IMP process.
“[The projects] are not currently planned. The Institutional Master Plan is a City of Boston zoning requirement,” Nicksa said.
According to the Oct. 19 minutes of a previous BU Community Task Force meeting, Nicksa said the renovation of Myles Standish Hall will likely be part of the next IMP. If BU moves forward with renovations, he said they would result in “fewer beds due to today’s housing codes.”
At the meeting, Nicksa also said this factor has caused BU to want to finalize construction plans for the Student Village III.
BU applied for a two-year extension on their third IMP in 2010 to include the construction of the East Campus Student Center at 100 Bay State Rd., according to a Sept. 29 Community Update released on the Community and Government Affairs website. The next IMP will be effective through 2021, the update said.
“It’s sort of a compilation of what exists on the campus now and what the university’s anticipated wants and needs are,” said BU Spokesman Colin Riley in a phone interview. “Once an Institutional Master Plan is in place, you get to move ahead with your projects.”
Riley said if plans are approved for Student Village III, the new dormitory will provide housing for 523 students.
BU Community Task Force Student Representative Prutha Patel, a senior in the School of Management, said the Student Village III is expected to be constructed in a few years if it becomes part of the IMP. The Myles renovations are set to begin about two years after the completion of the Student Village III project, when it starts running as a residence hall, she said.
“The building of Student Village III is intended to increase undergraduate housing inventory in addition to meeting the need for undergraduate housing,” Patel said. “Following the constructing of StuVi I and StuVi II, it seemed as though there was an increase in demand for on-campus housing, especially from the upperclassmen.”
According to the Oct. 19 minutes, Nicksa said the goal for the next IMP is to appeal to more upperclassmen for them to continue living on campus.
“That’s been our goal for a long period of time,” Riley said. “We have more upperclassmen in student residences than ever before.”
The construction of the first Student Village at 10 Buick St. substantially increased the number of upperclassmen living on campus because it provided the kind of apartment-style accommodations that students desired, along with security measures that parents anticipated, Riley said.
Patel, who lives in Myles, said that while she likes the residence hall as it is, she supports the plan to create Student Village III.
“As a student, I feel that this project is great for the university, as it is adding to our housing inventory and not only allowing, but also encouraging students, to live on campus,” she said.

Danielsen Hall is a colossal sh**hole that needs to be either renovated or torn down. But preferably the latter. There’s mold in my closet, and the window sills are rotted to the point of having holes. The hot water in the sink doesn’t work, and the heater spews steam from a broken valve. I could go on and on…
I have been surfing online more than three hours these days, but I never found any fascinating article like yours. It’s pretty value sufficient for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made excellent content material as you probably did, the web might be much more helpful than ever before.
