Huskies surge past Terriers in opener

For Boston University men’s lacrosse senior co-captain Mitch Wilson, these were not the statements he wanted to make after yesterday’s showdown with Northeastern University.

“I know we will bounce back,” he said. “When you only score five goals, I don’t think you will ever win a lacrosse game.”

Wilson was referring to the Terriers’ 10-5 loss yesterday at the hands of the Huskies. However difficult it may be, Wilson is confident that the team will rebound on Friday against the University of Rhode Island.

“I really do think we have a good team,” he said. “We are an offensive team.”

“The better team won today,” said junior Brad Dynowicz. “We got beat in every aspect and we made a lot of mistakes. Northeastern played well and deserved to win.”

The opening day loss drops the Terriers to 0-1 on the young season, but there were some positives in defeat.

“Our goalie [Dynowicz] kept us in the game with huge saves,” Wilson added.

“We got great goaltending,” said junior defenseman Brad Eisen. “Northeastern took advantage of what we gave them, but they do not have a better team. We had way too many turnovers, and they took advantage of our mistakes.”

Juniors Gustav Schmidt and Adam Krumbholz each had two goals and an assist, while sophomore Matt Lau also hit the back of the net once.

“Matt Lau really hustled and played well, and the defense did what they could do,” Dynowicz said. “It was our first time outside on a field, and we did the best we could.”

The team currently holds practices in the Armory, which makes it difficult to adjust to the weather and conditions of the open air.

“We have been playing indoors so far this season,” Wilson said. “[The loss] was what could be expected from a team that practices indoors and plays outside. The Armory has confined spaces, and we just weren’t ready to play on the field.

“I’m really embarrassed by my own play and taken aback by the loss. I don’t think Northeastern had a better team than us. It was our first game of the season, and they played well. … We had a lot of mental lapses and disorganization. I have a personal responsibility to play better. In three years, I have never lost to that team.”

Bouncing back from yesterday’s setback looks to be hard, as BU next faces a 5-1 University of Rhode Island team on Friday that has been gunning for the Terriers since last year, when BU beat the Friars in the playoffs.

“They are definitely one of the best teams in the league,” Wilson said. “It will be a challenge, and they already have six games under their belt.”

Things get a bit easier after that, when BU travels to the Big Apple for a date with 1-4 New York University on April Fool’s Day.

But don’t be duped by the record, Dynowicz warns.

“It’s not about who is the better team,” he said. “It’s about who plays better on a given day.”
