BU Takes On Stony Brook

It’s that time of the year when the Davids of NCAA basketball love to take down the Goliaths.

The Boston University men’s basketball team (17-9 overall, 11-3 America East) will begin wrapping up its regular season schedule tonight when it travels to New York to take on America East cellar-dweller State University of New York at Stony Brook (5-20, 4-11).

The Terriers dominated the Seawolves earlier in the season, winning 90-54 at The Roof. The team was led in that game by freshman standout Rashad Bell, who finished the night with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. BU jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the first three minutes of the contest and never looked back.

Bell and fellow freshman Chaz Carr have been the story this season for the Terriers. The tandem combined for 36 points the last time BU faced Stony Brook. The Terriers are coming off a 10-point victory against SUNY-Albany in which Carr and Bell combined for 31 points.

BU’s bench has performed well this season, averaging about 21 points per game. In the last meeting between the two teams, the bench scored a season-high 50 points.

In addition, BU has been stifling on the defensive end of the floor. BU ranks sixth in the nation in field goal defense allowed through Tuesday’s games.

The Seawolves have shot 41 percent from the field this season and are averaging about 61 points per game. They’re shooting about 32 percent from the field.

BU leads Stony Brook in every statistical category. The Terriers are shooting about 42 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point territory. BU is also averaging about 67 points per contest.

It’s crucial for the Terriers to stay focused in their last two games of the season. The University of Hartford is breathing down BU’s neck, and a Terrier stumble could result in the loss of the second seed in the America East tournament.

As of now, BU would be matched up against the University of Vermont in the tournament championship if both can survive the earlier rounds of the tournament.

The Terriers will round out their regular season schedule against the University of Maine on Sunday at The Roof.
