Preemptive Strike is Necessary

Being an alumnus (SMG ’89, LAW ’92), I stumbled upon the Daily Free Press web page and registered to receive your email newsletter. I congratulate the Daily Free Press on running a first-rate web page.

I do take a different position than Mr. Dempsey (9/27 column) when he compares a preemptive strike on Saddam Hussein to hitting another car on the road so as to avoid it from doing greater damage to mine as an argument against any preemptive strike against Iraq. Saddam is not just another car on the road and these are not ordinary times. Any person who has the capability of manufacturing and delivering weapons of mass destruction and who has demonstrated the willingness to use those weapons of mass destruction on his own people (which Saddam did against the Kurds)is a viable and necessary threat that must be removed from the world stage.

I ask Mr. Dempsey would he have favored a preemptive strike on Al-Qaeda prior to September 11, 2001? How about against the Japanese prior to December 7, 1941? How about against Hitler in the mid 1930’s? Logically, he must answer “no.” As both readers of this periodical and leaders of tomorrow, do you answer “no” as well? And are you prepared for the consequences of inaction? Think about it. Your life might depend on your answer.

Sincerely, Mark S. Miller (I ask that you not publish my email address..if it’s required, then kindly delete all contents)
