Minivan hits cyclist

A Boston University student riding her bicycle to class Wednesday morning was hit by a minivan in yet another campus accident involving bicycles and motor vehicles.

The victim, who was struck near 704 Commonwealth Avenue at about 8:40 a.m., was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, Boston Police Department spokesman David Estrada read from a police report. The victim complained of pain in her left hip.

BPD’s report differed from the BU Police Department’s version, stating that a second vehicle was also involved, but Estrada was unable to determine whether this vehicle hit the victim as well. The report suggests that the two vehicles may have come in contact with one another, he said. BUPD cited only one vehicle in the collision.

The cyclist was traveling in the inbound bike lane of Commonwealth Avenue when she tried to turn left, BUPD spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Burke said. The light turned green as she was cutting across vehicles stopped at the Cummington Street traffic light, and when traffic started to move, she was hit by the Toyota minivan.

The driver was not ticketed for the incident, but BPD, BUPD, the Boston Fire Department and an EMS vehicle responded to the scene. Traffic was briefly interrupted, but returned to normal within about 15 minutes.

  1. traffic engineers and cyclists need education!

A clear reminder that the City and the University need to educate people on how to use the infrastructure instead of assuming people already know how to use them.
Up till now the bike lane installed provides nothing but a false sense of security.
This lady tried to cut across 2 lanes of inbound motor vehicle traffic, 2 streetcar train rails, and 2 lanes of outbound motor traffic to get to the bike lane on the other side. The incident is screaming at us
