Riding the momentum of a 2-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts at the Terrier Tailgate Sunday, the Boston University women’s soccer team will make the short trip to Chestnut Hill Wednesday, where it will clash with regional-rival Boston College at 7 p.m.
Led by the play of sophomore Jessica Luscinski, the Terriers (2-0) will be looking to bring home their third-consecutive win Wednesday after starting the year with consecutive victories over the Minutewomen and the University of Rhode Island, both by 2-0 margins.
Luscinski, a member of the America East All-Rookie Team and BU’s Rookie of the Year last season, has tallied a goal in each of the Terriers’ first two games. BU has also been supported by goals from senior Farrell McClernon and sophomore Cynthia Warman.
In net, BU coach Nancy Feldman has split time evenly between senior Janie Reilly and sophomore Annie Tooley. Both Reilly and Tooley have been flawless in net with 90-shutout minutes each.
Reilly, a returning America East All-Conference Second Team honoree, figures to retain the starting job for BU once conference play resumes. That said, the injury bug has bitten Reilly before, as she suffered a season ending injury as a red-shirt freshman in 2007 and then played through a lower-body strain for much of last season. Certainly, Tooley, whose confidence left an impression on Feldman last fall, has proven herself to be, at the very least, a strong insurance policy.
Wednesday’s contest will mark the 14th time in 15 years BU and BC (1-0) meet up, with the Eagles hold a 9-4 advantage in those games. Last year, BC knocked off the Terriers, 1-0, at Nickerson Field in the Terriers’ season opener.
The Eagles enter action Wednesday just one game into their season schedule, having knocked off Fairfield University, 5-0, Friday night at Newton Soccer Field. BC was led by two goals from junior Brooke Knowlton, who put five-of-eight shots on net in the game. Knowlton led the Eagles in goals (9) and points (21) in 2008, netting five game-winners on her way to Soccer Buzz Northeast Region first-team honors. In total, six Eagles tallied points in the contest, including a goal from freshman Victoria DiMartino, who put four-of-eight shots on net.
Wednesday’s away game is the first of six on the Terriers current road-stretch, which includes games at Loyola College, West Virginia University, the University of Connecticut, Penn State University and Northeastern University.
