• Randy Numan (“If I Didn’t Have You” from “Monster’s Inc.”) • Enya, Nicky Ryan ‘ Roma Ryan (“May It Be” from “Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship of the Rings”) • Diane Warren (“There You’ll Be” from “Pearl Harbor”) • Sting (“Until…” from “Kate and Leopold”) • Paul McCartney (“Vanilla Sky” from “Vanilla Sky”)
Well, the “good sport” award of the night goes to “Monster’s Inc.” songwriter Randy Newman, who will leave the Oscars empty-handed, as he does year after year. But the disgust will most likely be absent from his face as he gleefully accompanies himself on piano as he performs the catchy duet “If I didn’t have you” from the film’s end credits.
The Enya-voiced “May it Be” from “Fellowship of the Rings,” and Diane Warren’s “There You’ll Be” from (choke) “Pearl Harbor” have no buzz going for them, so getting a chance to perform their songs is reward enough.
That leaves the two rock legends to contend for the gold. Sting’s “My Funny Friend and Me” lost out last year to Bob Dylan’s “Things Have Changed,” but look for his “Until” from “Kate and Leopold” to edge out Paul McCartney’s hauntingly beautiful “Vanilla Sky.” Oh well, at least we get to see Sir Paul perform a song other than his annoying “Freedom” in a live event.
WILL WIN: “Until” SHOULD WIN: “Vanilla Sky” REALISTIC UPSET: Randy…hahaha…Newman…(snicker) (Film Editors note: Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
