As a BU Alumni (ENG 83), I read with shock to see how rampant crime is on campus now. I myself was once a victim of on-campus theft when my roomate unwittingly left our dorm room unlocked and my stereo was stolen, but incidents like this were few and far between at that time. My advice for students is to keep your guard up and wise up about things. Some of the incidents in today’s police report could have been prevented. It is not wise to leave your backpack lying on the floor in a public place with an expensive laptop and accessories in it. It is not wise to leave your ATM and credit cards in an unlocked locker. It is not wise to leave $600 cash in a jacket hanging up at work. BU is a great place, but it’s not a utopia where crime doesn’t take place. It’s a shame that it has become like this, but it is now a fact of life. Do your best to avoid becoming a victim by protecting your stuff and being watchful of your surroundings at all times. Give these criminals out here fewer chances to strike and crime will eventually drop on campus.
