Boston, I’m sold

With a bowtie on my chest and shirt tucked, This Boston newbie was ecstatic to stroll down Newbury Street Thursday night. Ready to face a new city of people and fashion. I doubted the few hours of Fashion’s Night Out 2012 would allow my friends and I to explore all the great stores I’d heard about.

What’s Fashion’s Night Out? Oh, you must be even newer than I am here. It’s a celebration of fashion that’s taken place since 2009. Vogue magazine and the Council of Fashion Designers of America paired up to create after-hours shopping with displays, food, music and huge crowds in cities all over the country. Boston’s Newbury Street was shut for the duration of the night for a fashion party, if you will.

So, we strolled down Comm. Ave. from our BU dorms leisurely, but eagerly. My feet hit Newbury, and the noise of fashion filled my head. I thought, “Heaven has to be similar to the array of designer storefronts with glowing lights and beautiful fashionistas strutting down the street.” There were musical performances—something I wasn’t expecting. As we continued to walk, pleasant instruments graced my ears and fueled my desire to explore more of the stores.

Although these stores are in my Floridian hometown, Urban Outfitters, Zara, Fossil and American Apparel made my list as favorites for the night. Fashion’s Night Out gave me the perfect excuse to dive into Boston’s fashion scene all at once, yet some familiar stores made me feel back home again. But Boston’s home now, too, and the energy at Fashion’s Night Out made me glad that it is. The environment was very friendly and active as all of the storeowners walked around handing out flyers and advertising events that they were hosting.

So I guess I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and liveliness of the event on Newbury St. this fourth annual day. The radiating interest for fashion and culture I saw there is definitely my thing. The image of old brownstones of Newbury Street paired next to the modern and sleek Prudential building lingering in the skyline and modern fashion will stay in my mind. Looks like I’ve sunk my heart into Boston and its fashion. Sorry in advance to my wallet.
