On Saturday, the No. 8 Boston University women’s ice hockey team defeated the College of the Holy Cross at Walter Brown Arena by a score of 7-1.
The Crusaders (1-26-3, 1-22-1 Hockey East), who are in their inaugural Division I season, scored the first goal, but the Terriers (16-6-7, 13-5-5 Hockey East) came back hard to keep their undefeated streak going for a 10th game.
“It was really a great game,” said BU head coach Brian Durocher “Holy Cross is just starting out with hockey, but it’s good that we were able to keep our heads with the Beanpot so close.”
The first period saw no goals being scored, though both teams pushed each other with 14 shots between the two sides.
“We played well, even in the first period. Even though no goals were scored, our defense was great,” said BU head coach Brian Durocher.
Redshirt junior defender Abbey Stanley was nearly able to score on the breakaway two minutes in, but was shut out by Crusader goalkeeper Julia Pelletier.
At the 4:04 mark in the second period, Holy Cross managed to score first. Crusader forward Carlie Magier was assisted by forward Julie Matthias and defender Tori Messina, taking advantage of a power play.
However, BU answered with three back-to-back goals.
Freshman forward Courtney Correia was first to respond with a goal, assisted by freshman forward Emma Wuthrich and junior defender Breanna Scarpaci.
A minute later, sophomore forward Kristina Schuler was assisted by junior forward Deziray De Sousa and senior linemate Mary Grace Kelley, who passed Schuler the puck after collaborating their efforts around the net.
Thirty seconds later, Correia found the puck from freshman forward Kaleigh Donnelly in the Terrier zone, and faked out Pelletier to backhand in her second tally of the game.
The period briefly favored the Terriers with a 5-on-3 play, though BU was unable to light the lamp during the advantage.
After 10 more minutes of play, the Terriers scored their fourth goal before the period ended. Assisted by Wuthrich and Stanley, Schuler netted her second of the game.
During the second intermission the BU Pep Band came down off the stands to perform their annual “Pep Band on Ice” show for the first time this year. The band played a rendition of “Holiday” by Green Day while moving across the rink.
In the third period, BU was able to score first. Five minutes in, the Terriers got their fifth goal from redshirt junior forward Sammy Davis, assisted by junior defender Alexandra Calderone and sophomore forward Jesse Compher.
Calderone cleared the puck from BU’s side and Davis chased after it into the Crusaders’ goal.
With less than two minutes to go in the game and the Holy Cross net empty, BU was able to score two shorthanded goals. The Terriers’ sixth came from Compher, who sent the goal in long-distance off an assist from freshman defender Alex Allan.
Shortly after, BU got their seventh from Davis, who was assisted by senior defender Reagan Rust. With the goal, Davis became the third Terrier to score a pair of goals in the game.
BU’s next game is against Harvard University on Tuesday, in the championship round of the Beanpot. The Terriers will look to win the tournament for the first time ever as a varsity team.
“Harvard’s got a great team,” Durocher said of the upcoming action, “but it’ll just be another hockey game.”
