We asked four members of the Boston University men’s hockey team what a typical Friday home game day is like for them. Read what some of the best of BU had to say:

Senior captain Matt Grzelcyk

“I try to wake up around 9 a.m. on game days. I don’t have class until 11. I get breakfast, just kind of hang out in the room and try to relax and not think about the game as much as I can. It’s kind of hard, obviously, guys get worked up and stuff. After that, I go to class, walk back — I like to walk instead of taking the bus just to get your legs going a little bit. 12 p.m. rolls around, I usually come to the rink, tape my sticks, make sure everything is set to go. I like to switch between an ice bath and a cold bath, like three minutes each, to keep the body fresh. Sometimes I’ll skate — it depends on how I feel. Toward the end of the season, a lot of guys don’t skate because they’re tired. 2 p.m., we have pregame meal, then I go back and try and take a nap. Usually it doesn’t happen though because I’m thinking about the game. Then I come to the rink. I used to be superstitious freshman year, but try to stay away from it, because if one thing goes wrong, you’re thinking about it. I don’t really have any superstitions anymore.”

Senior forward Ahti Oksanen

“Normally, I start my Friday morning, we have a team breakfast at T. Anthony’s, normally it’s around 8 or 10. We come right to the rink, and we have pregame skate, depending on what time the game is, we have the skate between 10 and noon. Then we come back, we hang around here, I take care of my skates, make sure my helmet and equipment is okay. Then we have a pregame meal at the rink, and after that, we go back to our rooms. I usually nap, take a couple-hour nap. If the game is at 7 p.m., I normally wake up at 4 p.m., dress up, put my suit on, come to the rink. Normally I’m always the first one to come to the rink. I have a long list of superstitions that I have to do before a game. I always have an apple, a Twix bar and a glass of water. I just like to have some chocolate before a game. I always grab all my sticks, no matter which one I’m going to use, I take all my sticks, and I always walk to the same seat every time. I’ve been sitting in the same seat for four years now. Then I normally come back, change my laces on my skates, and around that time, people are starting to come to the rink. And then we go play soccer in the gym until we start our warm-up.”

Junior forward Nick Roberto

“I’ll wake up on a Friday, go to the dining hall and get an omelet made by Dez. I’ll go to class, get out of class, then come to the rink, change, put on my equipment and go on for a pregame skate. Usually I’ll go on for about 30 minutes. Then at the end, I’ll work with [junior defenseman] Doyle Somerby on some one-timers. Get off the ice, probably shower, change, read a chapter of a book I’m reading. Then our pregame meal, I’ll eat, go back to my room, and try to take like an hour nap, get up, come to the rink, I’m pretty loose then. Change again, then we’ll play in the PGFL — the Pregame Football League. Me, Laner [senior forward Matt Lane], Dan-O [senior forward Danny O’Regan], [sophomore defenseman Brandon] Hickey, a few others, just three-on-three. Then right before we stretch, I’ll play a quick game of sewer ball with a soccer ball, Sean [Skahan] will put us through a stretch. Then I’ll listen to some music, and get ready for the game. I’ve got some weird [superstitions], but usually I put IcyHot down my back, down my spine.”

Sophomore goaltender Connor LaCouvee

“Probably wake up, around 9-ish, wake my roommate up, wake [sophomore defenseman] Brien Diffley up, force him to get out of bed. Then we’ll go have a little bit of breakfast, hustle over, catch the bus, get our 10 a.m. social psychology class, a very powerful discussion in there, rev our minds up for the upcoming day. Then we’ll head back, maybe get in a nap, it kind of varies. And then we’ll usually have a pregame skate here. Keep it a bit light. Then we’ll go back to the room for a bit, just kind of chill. Then we have a meal around 2 p.m., chicken and rice, I’m a huge fan of the yams, the sweet potatoes there. The guys kind of rip on me for it. But I like to eat a lot of those, so I’m usually kind of hogging the yams for the most part. We had the freshman table last year, so hopefully we can keep that the same as the sophomore table. A lot of laughs at that table, a lot of fun. So after that, get a quick nap in, usually two naps in one day, if we can hit it right, maybe three. I’m not usually hitting the first nap, but I’m definitely getting the second one. My roommate Brien, he’ll sleep as much as he can. After that, wake up around 4 p.m., 4:30-ish, get a shower in, come over to the rink and get ready to play.”
